Transgender documentarian Sam Feder's latest film "Increased Examination" offers a moving dual viewpoint – both an personal portrait of a leading trans activist and a critical analysis of journalistic coverage surrounding transgender rights.

Judicial Struggle at the Supreme Court

This documentary traces ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gets ready for oral arguments in the significant highest court case US v Skirmetti. These proceedings occurred in December 2024, with the court eventually ruling in support of the state's position, essentially enabling restrictions on healthcare for trans youth to stay in effect across multiple US states.

We created Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, stated Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my previous film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was a real push. Our purpose was to generate dialogue so people would understand more about the case.

Human Story Amid Legal Struggle

While Feder presents a extensive examination of how major media outlets have promoted transphobic narratives, the film's most valuable achievement may be its compelling depiction of Strangio. Typically a cautious lawyer in public appearances, Strangio reveals his authenticity throughout the documentary.

That was a major challenge, to open up parts of my life to a camera lens that I had made efforts to keep personal, shared Strangio. Feder said he wanted future generations to know that we fought, to see what was done in support of these battles for our material survival.

Varied Perspectives in the Struggle

To enhance Strangio's account, Feder features various transgender activists, including respected individuals from activism and entertainment. This film also presents viewpoints from cisgender allies who critique how established media outlets have contributed to negative reporting of transgender individuals.

The experience of transgender young people central to the court battle is represented through a remarkable young activist named Mila. Audiences initially witness her advocating for her peers at a school board meeting, with subsequent moments showing her speaking for trans rights outside the Supreme Court.

Personal Moments Beyond the Legal Battle

Heightened Scrutiny also includes poignant moments where Feder moves beyond the ongoing political battle, including footage of Strangio vacationing in Italy and receiving a tattoo featuring words from activist Pauli Murray's poem "Vision."

The tattoo moment is among my favorites in the movie, explained Strangio. Getting inked is almost like a contemplative experience for me, to be completely aware in my body and to view it as a container for things that are important to me.

Physical Identity and Representation

Feder's focus to lovingly capturing Strangio adding to his body art emphasizes that this documentary is primarily about trans physical selves – not only those of youth who face denial of their ability to live authentically in their own bodies, but also the physical forms of the many interviewees who participate in the film.

I produce films with a purpose, and part of that is selecting people who are exceptional and eloquent enough to carry the camera, shared Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an filming, my response is whatever makes you feel hot. This is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our image.

Impact and Optimism

A key element that causes Feder's works excel is his obvious ability for making his trans subjects feel respected, recognized and valued. This approach fosters genuine chemistry between Feder and Strangio, helping the filmmaker to realize his objective of portraying Strangio as a multifaceted human being and providing a testament for coming generations of how persistently he and others have fought for transgender liberties.

I hope not people to find themselves in a state of perpetual discouragement because of what the law is failing to provide us, shared Strangio. I aim to be in a method of using the law to reduce harm, but not to transform it into some kind of pathway for our liberatory potential. State bodies is not going to be the reflection through which we view ourselves.
