Gerrard in frame for Rangers comeback after Russell Martin is dismissed.

The Anfield icon is a leading candidate for a shock return to the Scottish giants following the confirmed sacking of manager Russell Martin.

Martin's ill-fated spell at Rangers ends

His unsuccessful Ibrox tenure ended with the boss exiting the the away venue via a side door and a pre-arranged transport after a level finish which left Rangers eleven points adrift from the top of the Scottish Premiership after just seven fixtures.

Angry supporters had gathered around the club coach in Falkirk, making their feelings clear.

Club hierarchy reluctant to dismiss Martin

The Rangers board had been unwilling to part with Martin, who was only appointed in last month, despite loud objections from the fanbase.

However, there was an understanding that the manager's role had become unsustainable.

The club have secured just a single victory of their top-flight games to date, which has been coupled with poor showings on the continental stage.

Overall, the coach managed only five wins of 17 fixtures, with a uninspiring, muddled brand of football that gained little support.

“While all transition periods require some time, outcomes have fallen short of the team's standards,” announced a Rangers statement on the weekend.

“Number two the assistant, and first-team staff member Mike Williamson, will also be leaving. Martin and his coaching team have put in tremendous effort throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the next chapter.”

Steven Gerrard secured the championship with the club

Gerrard claimed the league with the Glasgow club in the 2020-21 season, their lone triumph since that year.

His achievements in Scotland before then, combined with setbacks at Villa, creates uncertainty about his leadership skills.

Yet he is held in high esteem by the very set of fans the club urgently require back on side.

The rehiring of the Anfield legend, who most recently coached in the Saudi league, would generate significant excitement.

Gerrard will also be aware of what limited opportunities he has to be a manager in significant leagues.

The sacking will intensify scrutiny on Thelwell

Martin’s exit will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.

He had been very backing of the gaffer while announcing a transfer outlay of twenty million pounds in the off-season.

Martin had agreed to a long-term deal.

His past roles

The coach, who had previously coached the League One side and the Welsh club, managed the Saints to a rise to the top flight in that year after being brought in the earlier window.

He was sacked last winter after the the club won only one of their initial 16 matches.

He was chosen as the interim boss's successor in last month, after the interim head coach had taken over from the sacked Clement in the earlier part of the year.
