The Fianna Fáil nominee exited Ireland's presidential race just weeks ahead of the election

The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state right away.

He was set to be a candidate among three vying for the Irish presidency, beside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Yet, on Sunday evening he stated via a statement that he "erred which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I've chosen to withdraw from the presidential race with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family," he stated in a statement.

Additional details to come.
